About this grant

The Kindred Cares Grant supports programs, projects, and research in hospice, palliative, and end-of-life care for those with life-limiting conditions and their families. Funding is available for pediatric and AYA palliative care across Canada, and adult palliative care in Eastern Canada (NB, NS, PEI, NL). Maximum grant amounts are $30,000 for programs/projects and $10,000 for research.

Who can apply

  • Must be an organization with a Canadian charitable registration number or be affiliated with a qualified donee.
  • For pediatric and AYA palliative care: programs/projects in Canada improving quality of life for children, adolescents, or young adults with life-limiting conditions; grief and bereavement support for family/caregivers of a child or AYA with a life-limiting condition.
  • For research on pediatric/AYA palliative care: must be affiliated with an academic health science centre or university; early-career researchers encouraged.
  • For adult palliative care in Eastern Canada (NB, NS, PEI, NL): programs/projects improving quality of life for adults with life-limiting conditions; grief and bereavement support for family/caregivers of adults with life-limiting conditions.
  • For research on adult palliative care: must be affiliated with an academic health science centre or university; early-career researchers encouraged.

Who cannot apply

  • General grief or bereavement support (not specific to life-limiting conditions).
  • Administrative costs exceeding 10% (not including staffing costs).
  • Regranting of funds.
  • Travel expenses (exceptions considered).
  • Event or fundraising expenses.
  • Conferences, registrations, journal or publication costs.
  • Capital funding or donor-advised fund campaigns.
  • Funding for an organization that is not yet operational.
  • Political or lobbying costs.
  • Initiatives where benefits occur outside of Canada.

Application process

  • Download the application guidelines and eligibility (PDF).
  • Prepare a proposal of maximum 3 pages (standard margins, single-spaced, 12-point font).
  • Include organization information, main contact, project/program or research details, budget, timeline, evaluation plan.
  • Appendices (if applicable): patient partnership plan, references, figures/tables, reprints, REB approval, letters of support.
