About this grant
The WinterCity Festivals and Events Grant Program provides funding to support outdoor winter festivals and events in Edmonton. Eligible events must take place between January 1-March 31 or November 15-December 31, be held in Edmonton, and be primarily outdoors. Grants range from $500 to $60,000 and may not exceed 25% of total event costs.
Who can apply
- Not-for-profit or charitable organizations
- Organizations that undertake their work primarily in Edmonton or have a history of significant activity in Edmonton
- Events that take place between January 1-March 31 and/or November 15-December 31
- Events that take place in the city of Edmonton
- Events with expenses that, as a result of winter conditions, require additional funding
- Outdoor events primarily located in the public realm with more than 80% of programming outdoors
- Events held in person with attendance of 100 people or more
- Events open to the public (may be free, have a participation fee, require a donation, or be ticketed)
- Events produced by an organization (not an individual)
- Organizations in good standing and not in arrears with the City of Edmonton
- Events insured with a minimum of $2 million in general liability
- Events held in compliance with permitting, licensing, and public health requirements
Who cannot apply
- Events taking place outside of Edmonton
- Events that are indoors (more than 20% held inside)
- Seasonal programs and activities such as snowbank ice rinks, winter patios, trail grooming
- Registered programs such as day camps, lessons, community programs
- Private events (e.g., weddings, graduations, celebrations of life)
- Virtual events
- Professional, semi-professional, and amateur outdoor spectator sporting events
- Events intended to raise funds for specific individuals, charities, or groups
- Film productions
- Protests, rallies, demonstrations, and marches
- Stand-alone markets
- Commercial, promotional, or marketing activities
- Events that require membership to observe or participate and are not open to the public
- Primarily religious services or activities delivered by faith organizations
- Events run by for-profit organizations
- Events run by government: City agencies, boards or commissions, educational secondary institutions, or political parties
- Political campaigning
- Capital projects
- Performances, exhibitions, or activities that promote or incite racism, hatred, or violence
Application process
- Review eligibility criteria and Program Guide
- Ensure your event aligns with the City Plan and provides public benefit
- Provide general information about your event
- Provide total estimated event expenses, eligible expenses, and total revenues
- Provide a description of how you intend to use the funds if awarded (1,000 words or less)
- Have the following ready: general organizational and event information, budget overview (PDF or Excel), understanding of event goals, public benefit, and alignment with the City Plan, signed declaration
