About this grant

The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG) is an employer-driven program that partially reimburses employers for the cost of sending employees or unemployed Albertans for productivity-skills training. Employers apply on behalf of trainees. For existing employees, government covers 50% of eligible training costs up to $5,000 per employed trainee per fiscal year. For unemployed Albertans being hired and trained, up to 75% of costs are covered, up to $10,000 per trainee per fiscal year. An employer may receive up to $100,000 per fiscal year in total.

Who can apply

  • Private sector employers, including incorporated and unincorporated businesses and partnerships
  • Non-profit sector employers
  • First Nations and Métis Settlements
  • Trainees must be current or prospective employees who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act entitled to work in Canada
  • Training must focus on productivity-skills development in Business Process and Operations Management, Technical, or Digital and Technological categories
  • Training must be relevant to the trainee's job
  • Training must be completed within 52 weeks
  • Training must take place in Alberta
  • Training must involve interaction with a qualified instructor and be instructional in nature
  • Training provider must be a third party, separate and distinct from the employer, with training as a main business activity

Who cannot apply

  • Company owners (including shareholders of a corporation and any member of the employer's board or council)
  • Family members of the employer
  • Temporary foreign workers or anyone temporarily working in Canada
  • Employee wages are not eligible costs
  • Basic skills, soft-skills, and interpersonal skills development training
  • Apprenticeship Technical Training programs
  • Self-study models such as instructional books or DVDs
  • The employer applicant cannot be the training provider
  • Trainees cannot be employees of the training provider

Application process

  1. Read the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant Applicant Guidelines
  2. Set up or update an Alberta.ca Account for Organizations; staff members needing portal access must have their own individual user accounts joined to the Organization Account
  3. Log in to the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant Portal and register your business
  4. Wait for a registration approval email or check the portal for a status update
  5. Complete the correct application in the CAPG Portal for your trainee(s) before training starts
  6. After approval, upload a completed Application for Electronic Payment (AEP) Form and a current bank document to the grant file to receive payment via electronic funds transfer (EFT)
